CRYPTO WALLET RECOVERY PHRASES
A crypto wallet recovery phrase—sometimes called a seed phrase—is a highly sensitive secret that can provide control over a wallet. Anyone who obtains it may be able to restore the wallet on another compatible wallet application and move its assets.
THE CORE PRINCIPLE
YOUR RECOVERY PHRASE IS NOT A PASSWORD YOU SHOULD GIVE TO SUPPORT. IT IS A MASTER SECRET.
01 · UNDERSTAND WHAT IT CONTROLS
A recovery phrase can be used to restore wallet access. Protect it with the same seriousness you would give a master key to valuable assets.
02 · NEVER SHARE IT
Do not give the phrase to friends, strangers, “support agents,” recovery services, websites or anyone claiming they need it to fix a wallet. Legitimate troubleshooting should not require handing your recovery phrase to another person.
03 · DO NOT TYPE IT INTO UNTRUSTED WEBSITES
A website that asks you to enter your recovery phrase to “verify,” “sync,” “upgrade,” “recover,” or “unlock” a wallet should be treated as highly suspicious unless you have independently verified the process and provider.
04 · STORE IT SECURELY
Keep the phrase in a secure offline form appropriate to your circumstances. Avoid unnecessary digital copies, screenshots, cloud notes or ordinary messaging applications.
05 · BEWARE OF FAKE RECOVERY HELP
After a wallet problem, people are often vulnerable to urgent offers of assistance. An attacker may claim to be a wallet expert and ask for the phrase or private key. The problem itself can become the bait.
06 · KNOW THE CONSEQUENCE OF LOSS
If a recovery phrase is lost and there is no other legitimate recovery method, access may be permanently unavailable. This is why secure backup planning matters before a problem occurs.
EXAMPLE
Your wallet stops displaying a token. Someone in a social-media group offers to restore it and asks you to send your twelve-word phrase. Do not send it. First verify the wallet address, network, transaction history and token visibility through trusted sources.
WHAT TO DO
- Treat the recovery phrase as a master secret.
- Keep it offline and secure.
- Never disclose it to support or strangers.
- Never enter it into an unsolicited website.
- If you suspect it has been exposed, stop treating the wallet as secure and follow appropriate wallet-security procedures.
WHY THIS MATTERS
Blockchain transactions can be irreversible, and control of a wallet can depend on possession of its recovery secret.
