Impersonation occurs when someone pretends to be a person or organization you trust in order to influence your actions. A familiar name, photograph, writing style or caller ID is not independent proof of identity.
WHAT TO CHECK
- Do not verify identity using the same channel alone when a request is unusual.
- Use a phone number, application, website or other contact method you already trust.
- Be especially careful with money, authentication codes, passwords, recovery information, sensitive documents and account changes.
- If a familiar contact requests emergency money, confirm through another trusted method.
VERIFY BEFORE YOU TRUST. Verify the request, not merely the identity presented by the request.
